Quarterly Update from the PTSA President – Spring 2018

WWE Families,

Oh me, oh my…what a start to 2018!

It’s been a busy start to 2018 and we still have many events lefts for the year.  That said, as we head into spring break next week, once we come back, there are only two months left.  It’s going to go quickly! Thank you all for your support of our Pages with the Pack read-a-thon and the Missoula Children’s Theater production.  And for our upcoming talent show on April 27th, we have 100 students auditioning! WWE has talent indeed….so mark your calendars, it’s sure to be an amazing evening!

PTSA Happenings:

  • The Spring Book Fair paired up with Pages with the Pack and was a huge success!
  • Our Pages with the Pack read-a-thon had its most successful year ever, thanks to all of our hard-reading kids and all of the generous donors. It is our biggest fundraiser of our year and we exceeded our goal with over $31,000 earned and over 455,000 minutes read. The classroom doors looked amazing as always – congratulations to the winning classrooms. The individual winners enjoyed their limo ride to ice cream, but I am pretty sure that watching Ms. K and Ms. Pullen kiss George and Pepper (the goats) was the highlight of the year!! I hope you all tuned into the live stream to see them sleeping on the roof and enjoyed the bedtime stories as well. If you missed it, check out the recordings at https://youtu.be/JxwmfLTvVUc
  • The Missoula Children’s Theater production of Gulliver’s Travels was wonderful! Congratulations to all of the participants.
  • We have hosted two educational talks this year at the February and March PTSA General meetings.  Thanks to all of you who have attended and we hope that you have found these to be helpful. Please let us know if you have topics you would like to explore next year, as we would like to continue this effort.

Upcoming Events:

  • Spring Movie Night is Friday, April 13th at 6:30 pm in the gym. The students voted at school and overwhelmingly choose Wonder as the movie to watch. Please join us for this fun, free, FAMILY night out!
  • West Woods Got Talent! Will be held on Friday, April 27 at 6:30 pm in the gym! We have so much talent this year, it’s going to be a great show! We hope you plan to come and support all our talented students, even if your child isn’t participating.
  • PTSA General Meetings: Only two more for this school year on April 17 and May 15. We hope you join us as we discuss ongoing activities and changes for next year.
  • WWE will host its first multicultural night on April 19th…mark your calendars!
  • Fore the Kids Golf Tournament has a new location! We will be at Applewood Golf Course this year. Join us for a scramble format tournament on May 4th.
  • Legacy Brick Campaign: buy a brick to be placed as a part of the flooring to the Outdoor Classroom and leave your child’s legacy for all future generations! This will help to fund Phases 3 & 4 of the OLE! Information to come soon.
  • EduKits will be offered again this year; but will only be available for purchase online
  • We will not be offering Summer Bridge Books due to low purchasing volume. They are usually available for sale at Jake’s Toy Box if you are interested.

Communication Sources:

  • Wolf Tracks – We are working on revamping Wolf Tracks, continuing to make sure it’s a great source of information for our families.
  • Weekly Principal Messages -This is now located within Wolf Tracks and sent out separately on Sunday afternoons
  • WWE PTSA website and WWE School website – both of these websites are great sources of information. Take a peek as they are continually being updated!
  • Friday Folders also have important information in them, so keep your eyes peeled!

Other Reminders:

  • Anyone is welcome to attend our General PTSA meetings, however, only members can vote. We love to see new faces…come and check us out….you will be surprised at how much fun we have!
  • WWE Apparel is available for purchase.  See our WWE PTSA website for styles and prices.  Show off your school spirit!

Feel free to reach out to me or any of the PTSA board members or our general PTSA email with any questions or concerns.  We are always interested to hear your feedback, concerns, and ideas.

Thank you parents for all that you do for our kids! Enjoy your Spring Break!!!!!!!

PWTP is raising money for WWE’s Outdoor Learning Environment!

WWE PTSA Fundraising – Winter 2018 Update

Thanks to all of our readers and parents for the great participation so far in our annual Read-a-thon! This is an important fundraiser for our Outdoor Learning Environment.  For our legacy WWE families, this may be old news…but for our new families, we wanted to make sure you knew where and how these funds would be used.

Before we forget, more information is available at the school website: http://westwoods.jeffcopublicschools.org/our_school/outdoor_learning_environment.

Several years ago, the PTSA undertook a comprehensive process to evaluate, identify and plan for ways to create an Outdoor Learning Environment, including functional outdoor classrooms, improved use of the blacktop and other available areas, and updating the play structures and ensuring that our student’s  play areas are as safe as possible for all students. We involved the Principal (of course!), as well as teachers and students to ensure we had a comprehensive design that maximized use of school land and gave our teachers and students more opportunities to teach and learn.  The master design is at the website link provided above.

Any idea how much the whole project costs?  Hint…..a lot!!  Current estimates are in excess of $239,000!

Since we did not have those funds just laying around and we did not want to fundraise the total amount before starting to create change, the project has been broken into logical phases so we can change as much as possible as soon as possible.

So far we have completed Phases 1 and 2.  Expenses already incurred: over $57,000.

We are actively fundraising for Phase 3 which includes:

  • Completing the outdoor learning garden
  • Creating an outdoor classroom in the front of the school (once the temporary classrooms are removed this summer)
  • Installing a naturescape/turf area behind the playground pits, including another outdoor classroom
  • Installing more seating and shade areas by the cafeteria

Total estimated costs for Phase 3: $63,000.

Then we move on to Phase 4:

  • Updating the second playground pit
  • Installing an ADA ramp
  • Updating the surfacing to fibar

Total estimated costs for Phase 4: $94,000…but we’ll get to that later.

We can provide so many links to studies that show how important it is for our kids to have chances to get their wiggles out, how great it is for their brains and their bodies to move.  But you know that already, right?

Since our school has continued to grow, so have our needs both inside and outside of the school building.  As recent proposed bond measures have not been approved by voters, these needs will continue to exist and that’s what we are looking to address.

Do you have more questions?  Please (really) see the link above or reach out to any PTSA Board member, we’d love to share more.  Alternatively, if you’d  like to contribute your ideas to the Outdoor Learning Environment Committee, please contact our Outdoor Learning Environment Co-Chairs Julie Gabler and Kristy Petroff at julie.gabler08@gmail.com and kpetroff@gmail.com.

New Year, New Cafeteria!

New Year = New Cafeteria! The students came back to school January 8th to a new cafeteria! The Fuel up to Play 60 Student Team led this mini-makeover. Their “fuel up” goal this year is:

“It all about your choices – go nutritious”

They choose the cafeteria as their first area of focus. They wanted a fresh, fun, welcoming, healthy school cafeteria – and boy did they deliver! There is a farm to table theme throughout – a colorful farm scape mural, farm stand with menu board, restaurant style faux wood wall near the serve line and of course an amazing farmer wolf on the wall (drawn by the amazing Mr. Josh Stolte – 5th grade teacher). The entire student body voted on the new name of the cafeteria – Wolf Pack Café.

We have many people to thank who made this possible: all the volunteer painters – especially the family of Emy Lee (2nd grader) for their artistic talent on the mural wall, Lowe’s Home Improvement, VinylWorks, Western Dairy Association/Fuel up to Play 60, DeCino Family Dentistry, iOrthodontics, Sherwin-Williams, Ms. Carrie Wallace, Ms. Deb Wilson, Jeffco Facilities and Paint Department and the entire Fuel up to Play 60 Student Team – YOU made this dream come to life!

BEFORE PICTURES:

For some reference, here are some before shots of the cafeteria. Don’t think anyone will miss the PEACH PAINT, huh?

Seeking Volunteers for Mileage Club

Mileage Club

This fall we will once again have Mileage Club on Wednesdays during lunch recess for all grades! We will need volunteers supervising the course (sidewalk around the field to the east of the school) and volunteers tracking kids/class laps – as there are rewards for classes/grades with the most laps (ex. eat outside during lunch, winner of the Golden Shoe, etc.).

Mileage Club is an optional activity for the students. If they choose to participate they can walk, jog, skip, hop, run – whatever they choose!

We need volunteers for 2 shifts:
10:30am-12:00pm (Kinder – 3rd Grade Recess)
12:00pm – 1:15pm (4th – 6th Grade Recess)

Would you like to get some steps/laps in yourself? Feel free to come walk or jog a lap with your child’s class. Any adult laps tracked count 5x for that class:)

Thank you in advance for your help for making this a safe, fun and active recess option for all of the kids at West Woods!

-West Woods Healthy School Team
